Eve of the child's fifteenth birthday
The Luminara is one of the oldest and most cherished traditions in the Aetherion Dominion: a sacred candle given to every newborn as a symbol of the Dominion's faith in knowledge and light.
Each family guards their child's Luminara for fifteen years, waiting for the night when it will reveal whether their child has been chosen to study at the Arcanum.
A thick pillar candle of smooth white Aetherwax, wrapped near its base with a simple silver band engraved with the child's name and date of birth. The design is intentionally plain: purity over ornament, so that its light, not its shape, defines it.
Each Luminara is scented in a way that reflects the child's spirit. From the moment it is gifted, it carries the fragrance of what comforts them most: rain on stone, mountain air, apple tea, parchment and ink. No spell or ritual creates this; it simply is. Dominion scholars call it "the soul's first echo."
The Luminara is kept in a place of reverence within the home; most often a mantle, altar, or protected shelf, until the eve of the fifteenth year. Families sometimes light a small lantern beside it during winter festivals, a sign of patience and hope.
On the eve of the child's fifteenth birthday, the family gathers quietly. The Luminara is placed near an open window and lit at dusk, its steady flame symbolizing the light of learning shared from generation to generation.
The family may stay together for stories, prayers, or quiet reflection, but before midnight, the child must be sent to bed.
Every Dominion household knows the rule: the Aethermoth only comes when the child sleeps.
If the child lingers by the window, no messenger will ever appear.
Parents call it "the Arcanum's first lesson in patience."
Sometime in the night, when all is still, a faint rustle stirs near the open window. A soft, silvery moth, its wings etched with geometric veins of light, glides toward the flame. The Aethermoth is the Arcanum's messenger, drawn to the exact resonance of a Luminara meant to be answered.
When it lands upon the flame, the reaction begins:
When the family awakes at dawn, the candle has vanished. Only the scroll remains, resting where the flame once burned.
The letter is brief and formal, written in silver ink:
"By decree of the High Arcanum of Aetherion, your Luminara has been received and answered. Present yourself at the Arcanum on the Tenth Day of Dawnveil to begin your studies."
Between the Luminara's answering and the Tenth Day of Dawnveil lies a joyful holiday known as Firstlight.
Families travel to Valemere or Elyndor (Elyndor is typically for more wealthy families) to purchase robes, study crystals, and the supplies needed for their children's journey.
Markets glow with color and music, and inns fill with proud parents and nervous students preparing to leave for the Arcanum.
Even those whose candles did not answer light lanterns in their windows to honor the chosen.
The holiday has become a celebration of knowledge, family, and unity, a season when every flame reminds the Dominion that its greatest strength is the pursuit of understanding.
The Luminara represents more than an invitation. It is a symbol of the Dominion's commitment to nurturing wisdom and light in every generation. Its glow is a reminder that learning is not imposed, but offered; that knowledge chooses the prepared heart as much as the sharpened mind.
