Time & Calendar Structure
"The Architects gave the world form, yet it was the Aether that taught it rhythm."
The Aeonic Cycle is the standardized reckoning of time across the known world of Aeonar, established in the centuries following the Cataclysm.
It defines the Second Aeon (SA), the era that began after the fall of the Archon and the shattering of the Aeonic Empire, and has endured for over a thousand years as the most widely accepted system of measurement among both the Aetherion Dominion and the Technocratic Federation of Solara.
Where the Dominion views the cycle as sacred geometry, a divine reflection of the Breath's rhythm, the Federation regards it as astronomical precision; a mathematical constant encoded into the planet's orbit by design or fate.
The calendar is built upon the Circle of Aeons, representing the perfect harmony of the universe: 360 days, one for each degree of the celestial sphere.
The Dominion teaches that the Architects forged this symmetry intentionally, aligning the planet's rotation and orbit so that even time itself moves in harmony with Aether's pulse.
Each month holds 36 days and carries both Dominion and Federation names, though most modern records use the Dominion standard due to its poetic resonance.
| Month | Meaning / Symbolism | Season |
|---|---|---|
| Dawnveil | The veiling of winter and the awakening of the new year; light returns to the world. | Spring |
| Emberlight | The rekindling of hearth and forge; creation and vitality flourish. | Spring |
| Stormrise | Tempests and growth; power surges through the land as life quickens. | Summer |
| Solvane | "Sun's Zenith," the brightest and most radiant span of the year. | Summer |
| Verdanth | Life in full bloom; the world's bounty reaches its peak. | Autumn |
| Ashfall | The turning of leaves and fading of light; reflection and gratitude. | Autumn |
| Hollowtide | The quiet between seasons; remembrance and communion with spirits. | Winter |
| Frostmarch | The advance of frost; endurance, discipline, and perseverance. | Winter |
| Nightwane | The longest nights of the year; faith and hope endure in darkness. | Deep Winter |
| Aetherwane | The waning of the year and stillness before renewal; prophecy and closure. | Deep Winter |
"Each Turning marks a breath of the Aether. Six breaths make the cycle."
| # | Name | Pronunciation | Cultural Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Marneth | MAR-neth | The week begins with renewal and preparation. Students and scholars return to study; temples reopen their halls. |
| 2 | Tareth | TAR-eth | The day of work, craft, and creation. Guilds and builders reforge tools; merchants open their stalls. |
| 3 | Wendar | WEN-dar | The day of journeys, diplomacy, and trade. Couriers, skyships, and messengers set out from the capital. |
| 4 | Tharion | THAR-ee-on | A day of training and endurance. Warriors drill, mages duel, and the Dominion's banners are flown. |
| 5 | Frelan | FRAY-lan | Families gather, communities feast, and bonds of friendship or oath are renewed. |
| 6 | Sunrel | SUN-rel | The world pauses. Work ceases. Citizens pray or meditate before the next Turning begins. |
Together they form the Six Turnings, a miniature reflection of the greater Aeonic Cycle that governs the heavens.
The ten months form five natural seasons, each lasting 72 days. The Dominion aligns its solstices and equinoxes with Aetheric resonance points, while Federation astronomers chart them by solar inclination.
| Season | Months | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Dawnveil, Emberlight | Rebirth and restoration |
| Summer | Stormrise, Solvane | Vitality and power |
| Autumn | Verdanth, Ashfall | Reflection and harvest |
| Winter | Hollowtide, Frostmarch | Endurance and wisdom |
| Deep Winter | Nightwane, Aetherwane | Darkness, prophecy, and preparation for renewal |
At the year's end, between Aetherwane and Dawnveil, lies a five-day span outside the normal flow of time.
Known collectively as The Requiem Days or The Breath's Pause, they mark the turning of the Aeonic Cycle and the rebirth of the world. These days are considered holy.
Scholars note that the Requiem Days were the only part of the Aeonic calendar preserved perfectly through the Cataclysm, perhaps because time itself refused to forget them.
The first of the Requiem Days begins in mourning. Bells toll across Elyndor and black banners hang from the spires. Citizens scatter ash upon their doorsteps to symbolize the dust of all that was lost in the passing year, and in memory of the Cataclysm that birthed the Second Aeon. No trade or travel occurs; it is a day for elegies, funerals, and cleansing flame. In Wintersmarch, warriors walk barefoot through snow carrying embers from the Forge of Aethrakar, letting them die in silence.
The Dominion forbids spellcasting, song, and even public speech from sunrise to sunset. Families gather in candlelight, communicating only through gesture or written word. The Arcanum says this is the moment when the world itself inhales, when Aether stills between cycles. Federation cities observe it with machine shutdowns and the dimming of all lights, their engineers performing silent maintenance in the glow of a single lantern.
At dawn, silence breaks as the first fires are relit. In the Dominion, every home and temple kindles a new flame using fresh Aether-oil, symbolizing rebirth. In Solara, the forges roar again; artisans and engineers unveil new inventions, prototypes, and artworks created in secret during the past year. Children carry lanterns in parades known as The March of Sparks, said to mimic the Architects scattering stars across the heavens.
A sacred day of purification and oaths. Rivers and bathhouses overflow as the populace washes away the soot of the old year. Mages meditate beneath open skies, breathing in Aether currents, while priests anoint the faithful with silver dust and water from the Luminous Veil. In the Federation, this is when apprentices swear their craft vows for the coming year, an echo of the Dominion's magical covenants.
The final and most joyous of the five. Tradition says the Architects once stood together on this day to realign the Breath and Spark. Across Aeonar, music returns in full splendor. The Dominion holds grand feasts lit by floating orbs of light, while the Federation celebrates with communal banquets powered by synchronized generators that cast mirrored auroras across their caverns. Families share gifts as the end of the year has arrived, and the new year is about to begin. It is the one night when both realms look upward, one to the stars, the other to the glowing vaults, and for a moment, remember they share the same light.
To the Dominion, these are holy days when Aether itself "rests." To the Federation, they are a practical adjustment between years, though even the most devout mechanists grow quiet, and take a breath, appreciating the hard work they've accomplished.
"Five days the world holds its breath, five virtues to guide the living flame."
| Requiem Day | Dominion Virtue | Meaning in the Cycle |
|---|---|---|
| Day of Ashes | Memory | To honor what was lost; the humility to remember that all creation is built upon ashes. |
| Day of Silence | Reflection | To still the mind and listen for the Breath; understanding comes only in quiet. |
| Day of Sparks | Creation | To ignite the flame anew; from stillness comes invention, art, and renewal. |
| Day of Breath | Purity | To cleanse body, mind, and soul; the Breath restores balance to all things. |
| Day of Harmony | Unity | To stand as one. Dominion and Federation, flesh and flame, Breath and Spark, all part of the same eternal design. |
Symbolism: The five virtues are often depicted as concentric rings surrounding the sigil of Aetherion: a circle of 360 marks for the days of the year, broken only by a radiant five-pointed star representing the Requiem.
Dominion priests teach that if humanity ever forgets these virtues, the cycle will collapse, and the world will fall into silence once more.
The Aeonic Cycle mirrors the divine breath of creation: inhale (growth), exhale (rest). Priests teach that when the last cycle ends, the world itself will exhale one final time and be remade.
The Cycle is evidence of Aeonar's mechanical perfection, the ultimate "natural clock" of the cosmos. Many engineers and astronomers believe the Architects encoded this structure into the planet's orbit as proof of their design.
During the Day of Harmony, even the most divided cultures quietly acknowledge the shared truth: that time itself is the bridge between worlds; the one current that flows through magic and machinery alike.
The Aeonic Cycle replaced numerous regional calendars roughly 212 SA, when the Dominion's Council of Spires and the Federation's Chronometric Assembly jointly ratified a unified standard. It remains one of the few enduring symbols of cooperation between the two civilizations.
The Aeonic Cycle is not merely a measurement of time; it is the rhythm by which the world remembers itself.
