Terravane Dragons

    Terravane

    The Earthfire

    Overview

    Element: Earth and Fire

    Dominant Trait: Endurance

The Terravane are living fortifications. Where Ignivar rage and Volthar strike, Terravane endure. They are the Dominion's immovable anchor: dragons so resilient, so impossibly durable, that entire military strategies have been built around the simple fact that they cannot be moved unless they choose to be.

Terravane are the fusion of stone and flame, earth and fury, and the oldest of the great lineages. Their scales gleam like hammered bronze, layered and dense and harder than most fortification stone. Their breath weapon isn't just fire; it's superheated rock capable of melting steel and fusing sand into glass, and their claws can rend bedrock to carve tunnels through the deep. They are the dragons you send when "hold this position" means "hold this position even if the whole world shows up to argue about it."

They slumber through long decades of quiet, drinking in the slow pulse of the world beneath them, and when they rise it is with hunger and purpose, surfacing to bask in the sun and fill their bellies with sea-beasts and leviathans. Among dragon lineages, Terravane are known for their patience, their methodical approach to combat, and their absolute refusal to back down. Ever. From anything. This makes them superb defensive specialists and occasional diplomatic nightmares, because "compromise" has never once appeared in the Terravane vocabulary. They choose riders of unwavering resolve, those with strength of body and endurance of will, and their respect, once earned, is unbreakable.

    Characteristics

    Physical Attributes

Scales like hammered bronze and copper, dense and layered, hard enough to turn aside most weapons and to shrug off a fair amount of magic besides. Their breath burns with the heat of molten stone, and their claws tear through bedrock.

    Combat Style

Patient and immovable. Terravane anchor a position, melt anything foolish enough to be a wall, and outlast everything thrown at them before counterattacking at their leisure.

    Temperament

Grounded, stoic, and slow to anger, stubborn to the bone, and respectful of strength and size above all. "Tactical retreat" is a phrase they refuse to learn on principle.

Size: The size of a two-story house. Roughly thirty-five to forty feet tall, seventy-five to eighty feet from nose to tail, with shorter, stubbier wings of eighty to ninety feet, built for thrust and gliding rather than sustained flight.

Coloration: Bronze and copper through chocolate brown, khaki, and burnt umber, the colors of earth and worked metal.

Preferred Terrain: The molten caverns of the Dragon's Throat, the colossal tunnel that links the southern plains to the northern wastes of Wintersmarch.

Signature Ability: Fire that melts stone. A Terravane's breath burns through fortress walls and bedrock alike, opening tunnels and breaking defenses that would stop any other dragon cold.

    Battle Focus

Primary Role: Siege warfare, defensive anchors, and infrastructure demolition

Terravane are the Dominion's anvil. They are built for the destruction of fortresses and castles and the burrowing of tunnels, their talons made for digging and their fire melting the stone ahead of them. They are the first ones in, taking the brunt of the enemy's attacks while they break the way open for the army behind them. They excel at:

    • Siege breaking. Their molten breath melts through fortification walls, making them invaluable for ending prolonged sieges.
    • Positional defense. Place a Terravane at a chokepoint, and that chokepoint belongs to the Dominion. No exceptions.
    • Attrition warfare. They outlast everything. Enemy formations exhaust themselves trying to move a Terravane; the Terravane waits, then counterattacks at leisure.

Their breath weapon is less a projectile and more a geological event. They exhale streams of superheated lava that flow across a battlefield and harden into barriers of molten stone, which makes them exceptional at controlling terrain and denying enemy movement. Entire battle plans have been ruined by a single Terravane deciding that "this area is now lava." In defensive operations they are simply unmatched: their scales deflect most conventional weapons, magic tends to dissipate against their earth-affinity, and so the Dominion's most critical installations, its depots, command posts, and arcane works, are the ones handed to a dragon that physically cannot be moved.

Weaknesses: Speed. Terravane are built for endurance, not agility, slow in the air and ponderous on the ground, and a fast flier like a Volthar can outmaneuver one without much trouble. "Outmaneuvering" and "actually harming," however, are very different activities. Their stubbornness is its own liability too, since they have been known to hold a position long after its strategic value has evaporated, purely out of principle.

    Rarity and Population

    Status: Uncommon

The Terravane are uncommon, comparable in number to the Volthar, with a modest number bonded and a larger number waiting unbonded in the deep caverns of the Dragon's Throat. They are never the most numerous breed in the sky, but their worth in a siege is so great that the Dominion guards each of them closely.

They choose riders of unwavering resolve and endurance of will, giving their respect slowly and only to those who prove they will not break. Once forged, that bond is among the most steadfast of any lineage, an alliance as enduring as the stone the Terravane are named for.

"A wall is only a wall until a Terravane decides otherwise."
