The Luminous Veil
Also known locally as "The Bloomtide" or "The Violet Sea"
Description
The waters surrounding the Myrwood Peninsula shimmer with an unnatural violet radiance, strongest at night when waves pulse with bioluminescent light as if alive. Sailors claim the glow breathes, swelling and fading like the rhythm of a heart beneath the surface.
This phenomenon - known as The Luminous Veil - is visible for miles offshore, guiding ships by night but warning them of the enchanted shore.
The Source
The glow emanates from microscopic Aether-infused plankton and fungal spores that drift from the forest's root system into the sea. When disturbed, the water blooms with rippling trails of violet, pink, and cerulean light - a living aurora on the waves.
By Day
At dawn, the glow fades to a subtle opalescent sheen, as if the sea itself were made of liquid glass.
Origin Theories
1. The Breath's Overflow (Dominion belief)
Priests of the Arcanum teach that the Breath of Creation still lingers in the Myrwood, and the glowing waters are its overflow - divine energy purifying the world's wounds. Bathing in these waters is seen as a pilgrimage act; Dominion nobles even import "Veilwater" for ritual purification.
2. The Lysaran Bloom (Scholarly theory)
Arcanum biologists believe the effect began after Archmage Lysara's final experiment. In attempting to merge Aether with living ecosystems, she created a fungal network whose roots reached the sea. The glow marks the spread of that network - a living organism that spans land and ocean.
3. The Sea's Wound (Shadowborn view)
The Order of Shadowborn claims the violet waters mark a thin place - a rift where reality was weakened by Aeonic corruption. They whisper that beneath the waves lies an ancient ruin, still alive and pulsing with energy.
Mystical Effects
Veilwater is faintly magical; prolonged exposure can alter the body or mind
Physical Mutations
Some experience luminous veins or heightened intuition. Long-term residents develop bioluminescent features similar to the Myrkin.
The Siren's Call
Others hear faint singing in the water - a call few can resist. Sailors who answer often vanish beneath the waves.
Dreamtide
Those who sleep near the shore report strange dreams - visions of the sea floor and encounters with pale figures speaking in riddles.
Unstable Navigation
Aether currents beneath the surface make the bay unstable - compasses spin, ships drift against the wind, and fog manifests suddenly in geometric patterns.
A Warning to Sailors
"The Veil guides you safely to shore at night, its violet glow a beacon in the dark. But heed this warning, sailor - do not linger when you hear your name called from the depths. The sea remembers all who sail upon it, and some debts are paid in more than coin."
